Social Work/Mental Health Specialist

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform as an active member of the International Institute’s Social Work Department team
  • Provide consistent, professional and client-centered services to newly arrived immigrants, refugees, and asylees as well as secondary migrants
  • Conduct mental health screenings, assessments, and crisis intervention
  • Facilitate referrals to appropriate services, including but not limited to therapy and case management
  • Facilitate psychosocial support groups
  • Outreach to eligible participants for groups
  • Maintain documentation of all services provided within data base 
  • Maintain enrollment and outcomes data required per grant funding
  • Assist with outcomes report quarterly


  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Strong ability to remain calm during crisis
  • Boundary setting
  • Detail oriented and focused
  • Suicide risk assessment/intervention/safety planning experience (preferred)
  • Ability to work both independently as well as within a team
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and strengths based service frameworks
  • Bilingual/Multi-lingual preferred (preferred languages include Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Spanish, and Swahili)

Experience: 1-2 years of experience working with international populations preferred

Education: Masters of Social Work required
