Duties for this position include:

Provide Cultural Orientation (CO) newly arrived refugees

  • Create client attendance list, facilitate weekly meetings, schedule interpreters, administer curriculum assessment.  
  • Document client attendance, review and update curriculum as needed.

Assist clients in scheduling immigration appointments

  • Assess client for immigration specific eligibility; inform client of documents needed for specific immigration need
  • Collect fees and schedule client with immigration specialist on staff
  • Coordinate and provide transportation to Civil Surgeon
  • Take immigration/passport photos

Of note: It is a prohibited activity for an AmeriCorps Member to be involved with providing abortion services, referring clients for abortion services, making appointments for abortion services, and providing transportation to abortion related appointments.

Interpretation and transportation services for appointments

  • Schedule interpreters, as needed, for cultural orientation sessions
  • Coordinate and provide regularly scheduled transportation to Civil Surgeon for select immigration clients.
  • Set up appointments on staff calendars in Outlook for both cultural orientation and immigration.

Cultural Orientation – review and update curriculum for relevance to Louis refugees. 

Client Assistance and Education

  • Provide cultural orientation and assess clients’ knowledge of subject
  • Assist clients to learn home safety, medical access, emotional adjustment and other CO topics.
  • Teach clients their address and how & when to call 911



  • Assist in the recruitment, orientation and if needed, the supervision of volunteers

Attend meetings and trainings

  • Initial orientation, CPR/First Aid, Citizenship, Volunteer Recruitment, Respectful Treatment and Disaster Preparedness/Response training, additional professional development opportunities available throughout the service year.
  • Bi-monthly AmeriCorps meetings
  • Agency & department meetingsAmeriCorps trainings, events and activities such as Days of Service, Show-Me Conf. & MLK Day and other service project as they relate to the project goal.

The service commitment is for 11 months, 1720 hours.  Benefits available include:  Living Allowance, Health Care, Child Care Assistance, Assistance in paying student loan iintrest accrued during service term and the Segel Educational Award upon successful service completion.
